Can Heavy WIMPs Be Captured by the Earth?

چکیده
If weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in bound solar orbits are systematically driven into the Sun by solar-system resonances (as Farinella et al. have shown is the case for many Earth-crossing asteroids), then the capture of high-mass WIMPs by the Earth would be affected dramatically because high-mass WIMPs are captured primarily from bound orbits. WIMP capture would be eliminated for Mx > 630 GeV and would be highly suppressed for Mx ∼> 150 GeV. Annihilation of captured WIMPs and anti-WIMPs is expected to give rise to neutrinos coming from the Earth’s center. The absence of such a neutrino signal has been used to place limits on WIMP parameters. At present, one does not know if typical WIMP orbits are in fact affected by these resonances. Until this question is investigated and resolved, one must (conservatively) assume that they are. Hence, limits on high-mass WIMP parameters are significantly weaker than previously believed. The capture of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) by the Earth is calculated taking account of corrections due to the Earth's motion deep within the potential well of the sun. Two distinct types of capture are evaluated. First, direct capture of WIMPS out of the Galactic halo. Second, indirect capture of WIMPS which had previously interacted with the Earth and had lost enough energy t...

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS), with masses 2 0 (GeV), are candidates for the dark matter in galactic halos. We discuss the distribution and detectability of coherently interacting particles (such as massive Dirac or scalar neutrinos, solar cosmions, and some Majorana fermions) that have been captured into orbits within the Earth. Coherent WIMPS in the mass range from 8 to 21 GeV ...

Since Zwicky proposed the problem of the ‘‘missing mass’’ in 1933, a lot of theoretical and experimental effort has been made in order to unveil the nature of dark matter. Today, WMAP has provided very accurate data regarding the matter density in the Universe [1]. The energy density of the Universe is composed of 4% atoms and roughly 22% dark matter. Data from recent observations indicate that...

There are several observational evidences for the existence of dark matter in the universe. More than about 90% of the matter in the universe is in a form which is not directly observable. If the dark matter is in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) or cosmions, part of it is captured by the Sun, other stars, and even planets. In this paper, some basic ideas of the cosmio...
